چکیده

[1] We investigate the effect of self-attraction and loading (SAL) induced by the projected accumulation of sea water on shallow continental shelf areas. Using output from a climate model, we compute 21st century changes in regional steric sea surface height and find that steric changes are largest over the deep ocean and relatively small on the shallow continental shelves. The resulting redistribution of sea water towards the shelf areas leads to mass accumulation on the shelves and therefore to increased gravitational attraction as well as increased loading on the sea floor. We find that, depending on the scenario and region, SAL effects may result in an additional sea level rise of 1–3 cm on the world’s continental shelf areas by the end of the 21st century. These estimates are at most 15% of the combined changes in sea surface height induced by redistribution of water masses and steric expansion. Citation: Richter, K., R. E. M. Riva, and H. Final Report of Special Problem

Projections of global climate change over the next century indicate that multiple stresses to coastal ecosystems are expected. Sea level rise is one effect of climate change that may significantly alter current estuarine habitats, resulting in the need to modify current management strategies. A one dimensional (1D) hydraulic analysis was completed for the Caloosahatchee Estuary to determine the...

Appropriate Loading Techniques in Finite Element Analysis of Underground Structures

Stability of underground structures is assessed by comparing rock strength with induced stresses resulted from ground stresses. Rock mass surrounding the opening may fail either by fracture or excessive deformation caused. Accurate calculation of induced stresses is therefore fundamental in the stability analysis of an opening. Although numerical methods, particularly finite element method, are...

Effects of Caspian Sea water level fluctuations on existing drains

This study is an attempt to develop an integrated methodology to predict the impact of the Caspian Sea on flooding using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydrodynamic modeling. A rise in the sea level might lead to major flooding events, and have a severe impact on the spatial development of cities and regions. The feasibility of simulating a flood event along a drain channel is evaluat...

Evolving Understanding of Antarctic Ice-Sheet Physics and Ambiguity in Probabilistic Sea-Level Projections

Mechanisms such as ice-shelf hydrofracturing and ice-cliff collapse may rapidly increase discharge from marine-based ice sheets. Here, we link a probabilistic framework for sea-level projections to a small ensemble of Antarctic ice-sheet (AIS) simulations incorporating these physical processes to explore their influence on global-mean sea-level (GMSL) and relative sea-level (RSL). We compare th...
